But administrators, professors and students alike say that the issue of faculty-student dating is a complex one.Some say that the unequal power in a relationship between a student and a faculty member -- particularly one who is in a position to grade or make recommendations about the student he or she is dating -- is inherently exploitative.The social connections between teachers and students are critical for success inside and outside of the classroom.Over the last year and a half, we’ve collected hundreds of thousands of student survey responses to questions about students’ relationships with their teachers.Most had romantic little memories to share along with their monogamous admission, written with such fondness that you could feel it radiating from the screen.No matter how cliché, these people clearly had a love-struck youth, like the woman who was happy to simply cross paths with her lover on a crowded college campus, or the girl who appreciated being walked home every day, even though her boyfriend lived in the opposite direction.
However, a drastic change occurred, precipitated by numerous factors including, the consumer movement, the feminist movement, sex therapy, insurance companies and other organizations urging psychology to put its house in order, and an occasional vocal advocate of such sexual relationships (Romeo, 1978; Shepard, 1971).
The literature on ethics, standards, research, theory, and practice leaves both psychology graduate students and those psychologists responsible for their education without clear expectations, information, or guidelines concerning sexual intimacy in psychology training.
This article represents an attempt to raise the issue and to present some initial information. The purpose of this article is to raise some issues about sexual relationships between students and educators in psychology training programs and to present some relevant information.
"While it isn't specifically addressed in our regulations, I do think that we would find a faculty-student relationship ruled out tacitly by our other policies, particularly with respect to sexual harassment and notions of professional conduct," he said.
A Gray Area Representatives from the State University of New York at Purchase, Marymount College, Sarah Lawrence College, Pace University, Westchester Community College, Iona College and Mercy College also said that such relationships were discouraged by the administration though not specifically addressed in college policies.
A scenario that has been raising concern on college campuses might go something like this: He is a middle-aged English professor, an expert on Henry James, who appears worldly and sophisticated in his tweed jacket while lecturing to his class. The appropriateness of faculty-student dating is being discussed on campuses throughout Westchester, echoing a nationwide debate about whether such relationships should be tolerated, regulated or banned altogether.
